Just a few tips to remind your clients when using sunless tanning lotions:

Applying self tanning lotions take practice, but if you follow these suggestions and add a little patience, applying the self tanning lotion will be easier and sunless tans will be streak-free.

2. Moisturize every day the week before application.

If not a week, at least a few days prior, body lotion should be applied liberally immediately after shower or bath. In order to get an even application, application should start at the same place. Many times certain areas of the body, knees and ankles for example, are much drier than other areas. These areas soak up the self tanner which leads to blotchy coloring. Keeping skin plumped up with moisture will help.

Ingredients to Avoid in

The average adult uses nine personal care products a day, with roughly 120 chemicals spread among them, many of which are incompletely tested for toxicity. At Pravada, our focus is to continuously bring to our clients the best private label skin care formulations that they can brand and sell with pride and confidence.

As part of our efforts we look for products that contain the highest level of natural ingredients with the highest level of efficacy.  We also have a list of ingredients we avoid, all of which are outlined in the following excerpt.   Natural Solutions magazine, in collaboration with Whole Foods Market, has created the following list of toxic ingredients that you should avoid in personal care and cosmetic products.

1. Parabens, ubiquitous in skincare, preserve other ingredients and extend a product’s shelf life–but these antimicrobial chemicals also have hormone-disrupting effects.
2. Ureas, formally known as diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, or DMDM hydantoin and sodium hydroxymethyl-glycinate, are preservatives that have the potential to release formaldehyde in very small amounts and are a primary cause of contact dermatitis.
3. 1,4-dioxane, a chemical carcinogen, is created when ingredients are processed with petroleum-derived ethylene oxide. Common ethoxylated compounds include sodium laureth sulfate and polyethylene glycol (often listed as PEG). To avoid it, skip any product with the following ingredients: myreth, oleth, laureth, ceteareth (or any other -eth), PEG, polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, or oxynol.
4. Petrochemicals are derived from crude oil. Petroleum-based ingredients such as petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin (derived from nonrenewable sources) form a barrier when applied to the skin that does not allow it to breathe and can clog pores.
5. MEA/DEA/TEA are “amines” (ammonia compounds) and can form harmful nitrosamines when they come in contact with nitrates. Used as foaming agents, synthetic stabilizers, and to adjust the pH of cosmetics, they can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation, and dryness of the hair and skin.
6. Petroleum based Sulfates, such as sodium lauryl are harsh detergents that give cleansers, soaps, and shampoos their latherability.  Sulfates can cause eye irritation and skin rashes.
7. Chemical sunscreens, such as oxybenzone and octyl methoxycinnamate, have been shown to disrupt endocrine activity. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are safer alternatives.
8. Quats, such as benzalkonium chloride, steardimonium chloride, cetrimonium bromide, and cetrimonium chloride, give a positive charge to conditioners in order to prevent static. They are necessary for conditioners, but we have allowed only the mildest quats in our Beauty With a Conscience standard: guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, hydroxypropyltrimonium oligosaccharide, and SugaQuats.
9. Antibacterial compounds, such as triclosan and chlorphenesin, do not break down in the environment and may contribute to bacterial resistance.
10. Synthetic fragrances containing phthalates (pronounced THAY-lates) – synthetic chemicals have been commonly used to stabilize fragrances and make plastic more pliable. However, studies have shown these endocrine disrupters can mimic hormones and may alter development.  We understand that many customers prefer the complex and rich scents that can only be derived by using synthetic fragrances or natural oil blends (which are becoming more available, but at a signficantly higher cost) than you get with the single notes of an essential oil.   All of our suppliers are quickly moving to reformulate all synthetic fragrances to be phthalate-free.  Just ask us for suggestions on the best fragrances to use to avoid phthalates.
11. Synthetic colors are made from coal tar. They contain heavy metal salts that may deposit toxins onto the skin, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. Animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinogenic. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number.
12. Chelators, such as disodium EDTA and tetrasodium EDTA, are used in personal care products to remove impurities from low-quality raw materials. They do not readily biode-grade in the environment.
13. Animal testing: A grim history of cruelty to animals lies behind many cosmetic ingredients. Which is why we focus on natural – our products do not need testing on animals and we only work with suppliers that do not test their products on animals.

The cutting edge of skin care research shows that aging skin is the result of more than just years on the calendar. Exposure to environmental elements like sunlight, smoke, and air pollution causes photo-aging in skin. Not only does this lead to the formation of lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation – it can lead to more serious skin conditions, including skin cancer.

A comprehensive Vitamin C program, such as the Pravada Vitamin C Line can help prevent photo-aging and the onset of more serious skin conditions. Topical vitamin C has now been shown to provide up to eight times the skin’s natural protection from UV damage. While sunscreens are also an important part of the prevention process, although they cannot do it alone. Vitamin C protects your skin from the sun in ways that sunscreens can’t. When used together, Vitamin C and sunscreens provide almost complete photo-protection – preventing photo-aging, preventing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promoting vibrant skin health.

Oxidative damage shows up on our faces in the form of sun spots, discoloration, wrinkles, sagging, and loss of elasticity and glow. Vitamin C prevents oxidative damage by neutralizing oxygen-free radicals before they can attack the body. Some Vitamin C is available to the body by oral ingestion, but many individuals do not achieve even the minimum daily requirement through diet or supplements. Furthermore, Vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, and so must be reintroduced into the body AND skin on a daily basis.

Our formulators have refined ways to stabilize and deliver additional amounts of key Vitamin C into the skin. Continued research has demonstrated that, properly formulated, Vitamin C combinations work synergistically to provide enhanced benefit. Recent studies show that topical application of optimized Vitamin C combinations can provide up to eight-fold antioxidant protection, ninety-six percent reduction of sunburn cells, and prevent the formation of free radicals in UV irradiated skin (sun exposed skin).

Vitamin C is necessary for the production of collagen, the major structural protein of the skin and although visible differences will not be seen for approximately two months, you may notice a visible difference in skin texture, color and tone in as early as a few days. Our topical Vitamin C products will start to be absorbed by the skin almost immediately. Because these Vitamin C products were developed as a preventative treatment with the goal of protecting the skin from further environmental damage, the skin will benefit the moment the Vitamin C is applied. The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles will become less noticeable within two to six months. Individual results will vary, depending upon the condition of the skin at the time of initial use.

Most individuals find the ideal time to apply Vitamin C is in the morning, because during the day you are more susceptible to sun exposure and L-ascorbic acid provides photo protection from UVA/UVB radiation. You can also safely use it at night, as it stays in the skin for up to 72 hours, and cannot be washed off. Using our Vitamin C products once a day should be perfect for optimal results. Do not let the slight sting upon application scare you. The high acid levels are necessary in order for the Vitamin C to be absorbed. Other products with AHA’s can still very safely be used alongside of our Vitamin C formulations, and will actually be greatly enhanced by the addition of these products.

Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, and use.” – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

As the natural personal care product market grows, companies are looking for innovative ways to utilize natural ingredients while still creating an effective product. In doing so, green chemistry is advancing, and companies are mixing naturally sourced ingredients with safer, effective synthetic ingredients. We realize that not every product on the market can or will use only natural ingredients, but at least some companies who do use synthetics in their formulations are consciously making an effort vis-à-vis green chemistry to provide a product that is both safer for personal use and the environment. While green chemistry does not ensure the absolute safety of the products we use, it is a definitive step in the right direction. The backbone of green chemistry still consists of chemicals and chemical processes, but it is designed to reduce or eliminate negative environmental impacts.

Green chemistry continues to evolve. Companies are updating and innovating manufacturing processes and a number of benefits are following, including reducing waste, pollution, energy and resources, using non-toxic components, and creating safer products. The EPA has created Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry to serve as a guide for green chemists who want to reduce their environmental impact.

Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry
1.Prevention – It is better to prevent waste than to treat or clean up waste after it has been created.
2.Atom Economy – Synthetic methods should be designed to maximize the incorporation of all materials used in the process into the final product.
3.Less Hazardous Chemical Syntheses – Wherever practicable, synthetic methods should be designed to use and generate substances that possess little or no toxicity to human health and the environment.
4.Designing Safer Chemicals – Chemical products should be designed to effect their desired function while minimizing their toxicity.
5.Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries – The use of auxiliary substances (e.g., solvents, separation agents, etc.) should be made unnecessary wherever possible and innocuous when used.
6.Design for Energy Efficiency – Energy requirements of chemical processes should be recognized for their environmental and economic impacts and should be minimized. If possible, synthetic methods should be conducted at ambient temperature and pressure.
7.Use of Renewable Feedstocks – A raw material or feedstock should be renewable rather than depleting whenever technically and economically practicable.
8.Reduce Derivatives – Unnecessary derivatization (use of blocking groups, protection/ deprotection, temporary modification of physical/chemical processes) should be minimized or avoided if possible, because such steps require additional reagents and can generate waste.
9.Catalysis – Catalytic reagents (as selective as possible) are superior to stoichiometric reagents.
10.Design for Degradation – Chemical products should be designed so that at the end of their function they break down into innocuous degradation products and do not persist in the environment.
11.Real-time analysis for Pollution Prevention – Analytical methodologies need to be further developed to allow for real-time, in-process monitoring and control prior to the formation of hazardous substances.
12.Inherently Safer Chemistry for Accident Prevention – Substances and the form of a substance used in a chemical process should be chosen to minimize the potential for chemical accidents, including releases, explosions, and fires.

The concept of violet glass is not new; since the beginning of glass production (approx. 3,500 BC) violet or golden containers were used exclusively to preserve precious salves, oils, essences and alternative medicines. Today, thanks to science, we know that life (energy) is best preserved by Violet, which no other spectral range can compare. In 1851 Jakob Lorber’s (Graz, Austria. 1800-1864) edition “Healing Properties Of Sunlight” (Die Heilkraft des Sonnenlichtes) was published. In this volume he points out that violet glass is the ideal storage container for healing remedies and other substances that are sensitive to light.

In 1995, violet glass was introduced to the market for industrial use. Since that time several studies have been conducted to research and document it’s effectiveness. The results are remarkable:

1) a} The dark violet glass is an extremely effective filter from the most damaging rays of light which occur in the range of @ 420 to 750 nanometers, also known as the photosensitive range as well as the hard UV range. (According to the Fraunhofer Inst., Munich.) This has a twofold effect. The first being obvious; degradation is cut down by not exposing the contents to this spectral range. Amber glass is grossly deficient in comparison, as are other colored glasses.

b} The second effect comes about by the nature of our glass allowing a specific part of the violet/blue spectrum of light through as you can see when you look through one sidewall of a bottle at a bright light source. There is about 25% translucency in the 380-420 nm range, which, according to Dr. Jacob Jutz, stimulates biological substances. Bio-photon researcher Dr. Hugo Niggli, Eppendes, Switzerland, expressed himself similarly. Purely opaque glass would not allow this action to occur.

2) Dark violet glass is also a barrier to energy radiation from the product within the bottle flowing outward. No other glass compares in this respect either.

As a result products stay fresher, longer.
